Zinc House , Hove

Lewis McMillan Architects were appointed to design and draw up plans for the complete refurbishment of a 1960’s detached house in Hove. Working with the client’s ideas, Lewis McMillan designed an open plan family house, completely opening up the ground floor with exposed steelwork. The first floor ceilings were removed to heighten the bedrooms. A large box dormer was added to the rear to create a master bedroom, utilising the existing roof terrace, with en-suite bathroom and dressing room. An extension to the front creates a new entrance with corner window and window seat, a utility room, cloaks cupboard and guest toilet. A new oak staircase links the three levels. The entire site has been landscaped with board-formed concrete retaining walls and steps to create a driveway, front level patio, rear terrace and two garden levels which lead down to an external swimming pool. External materials include black zinc cladding to the first floor and roof, western red cedar vertical cladding to the front and rear extensions, painted brickwork and blue stock bricks, board formed concrete and poured concrete slabs to the patio areas. Black aluminium windows complete the look with large panes of glass on the rear elevation maximising the views to the south.
